Blues first choice left-back Alex Cochrane

Blues are set to intensify efforts to bring in a left-back.

After Alex Cochrane was withdrawn at Blackburn Rovers due to injury, it will focus attention on that area of pitch.

Lee Buchanan is still on the mend from a long-term knee injury and Manny Longelo was sold to Motherwell before the season began.

Chris Davies revealed that Cochrane picked up a knock at Ewood Park and the discomfort was such that he had to be replaced.

He noted that was ‘unusual’ in itself as the durable and reliable Cochrane has been a virtual ever present for the manager since joining from Hearts two summers back.

“We are looking in that position,” confirmed Davies. “We do need two left-backs so definitely cover and competition for Alex.

“That won’t change it too much just by nature we’ve only got two weeks to go (in the transfer window), so it’s something we’ve been looking at doing.

“Nothing’s imminent in the next day or so from my understanding, but there’s definite work to do, no doubt we need the depth.

“We need a few more players just to give us what we need depth wise and quality wise for the season ahead.

“It’s a long old road we’ve got ahead of us and we’re working hard on that, we communicate a lot, myself and the owner and Craig Gardner, and we’re always talking about what exactly we need and working hard behind the scenes.

“It just depends how it all falls, but there’s not like loads that we need to bring in, but we need a few more just to finish off the squad.”

Davies, meanwhile, has declared himself pleased how miserly Blues have been so far during the new campaign.

Ipswich Town equalised with the first shot on target in the opening league match – a penalty.

And both Sheffield United (in the Carabao Cup) and Rovers scored with the first attempts on target.

Blues have not only enjoyed more possession than their opponents, but stopped them from seeing the whites of the goalkeeper’s eyes in the main.

Todd Cantwell’s opener for Rovers was somewhat unusual, Davies argued.

“It’s not as if we are conceding a lot of territory and chances, we are not hemmed in at all.

“We are looking really strong in the games.

“What happens on that one (Cantwell’s), is that the ball goes back to him as the (corner) taker. He’s the one player nobody is thinking about.

“He’s arriving in the box and, to be fair, he’s caught it really well and unfortunately it got through the bodies. He hits it low and hard and it just zips through.

“It can happen. We are going to have games like that. We are going to have moments like that.

“But we haven’t given a lot away in the three games. I’ve been really pleased with amount of solid defending we have done.”
