Blues have been forced to temporarily shut down their Academy.

The training base for their youth sides at Wast Hills near Kings Norton, the Knighthead Performance Centre, has been closed due to a suspected outbreak of mumps.

Blues Under-21s Birmingham Senior Cup match at Coleshill Town on Monday evening was postponed ‘due to illness within our squad’, a message posted on the official Academy X account stated.

Scheduled training sessions for the club’s youth teams and schoolboy age groups have been cancelled.

It is understood that immediately after illnesses were identified the club undertook swab testing of players and staff from both the men’s and women’s sections to try and get to the root of the problem.

They are currently awaiting the results of those tests and will take appropriate action, as required. In the meantime, the training ground is off limits.

Blues Women are also based at the Knighthead Performance Centre but they can operate their set-up separately to the Academy, so they are likely to be able to function as normal.

They are scheduled to play Aston Villa Women on Friday, at Walsall, in the group stage of the Subway Women’s League Cup.

Chris Davies’ first team are not at risk as they train at a different venue, having moved to the Elite Performance and Innovation Centre (EPIC) in Henley-in-Arden before the 2023/24 season due to a fire at Wast Hills.

Blues decided to take these precautionary measures on the advice of their medical department after three cases of mumps were identified.

Blues Under-21s next game is on Monday evening against Bournemouth in the Premier League Cup at Stratford-upon-Avon.
