Chris Davies today revealed he was seeking three more players to add to his Blues squad.
And, speaking for the first time about one potential target, Joe Gelhardt, he said matters would become ‘clearer in time’.
Blues also have Bristol City midfielder Max Bird on their wish list – and his signing appears far more likely than Leeds United forward Gelhardt’s.
“We are hoping to finish off these next two-and-a-half weeks with a couple of players, I would say, two or three players who could add to us,” said the Blues manager.
“Maybe two or three would look to move on if they can’t be guaranteed the game time they would like.
“Hopefully in the next day or so we can add in an area and then we are just looking for the right piece or two to give us that extra push.”
Forever Blues understands that Blues have gone in for Gelhardt, who scored 15 times on loan for play-off victors Hull City last season.
And it looked as if they were making positive headway. But the Premier League status and windfall now afforded the Tigers means they are able to be very aggressive with the financial package they are prepared to commit, on transfer fee and wages, compared to Championship suitors like Blues.
Asked if he could comment on the Gelhardt situation specifically, Davies replied: “Not of any real substance on that one. I know there has been a lot of speculation on it.
“But I think with all that, it sort of becomes clearer in time.
“He certainly had a great season last season. There will be a lot of teams and clubs interested in Joe, for what he has done.
“But we focus on what we have got here and trying to make sure we start the league season well.”
Hull are reportedly prepared to pay Leeds £6.5 million for Gelhardt, who has 12 months left on his contract. Wrexham and Glasgow Rangers have also been among those interested.
Davies, at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s Championship opener at Sheffield United, outlined the kind of group he wanted to finish with once the transfer window has shut.
“I don’t want a big squad, I want a competitive squad.
“That’s something I’ve made absolutely clear. We don’t need certain surplus players, that doesn’t help you.
“We need a tight, small-ish squad, that they all feel valued and important. And competition for places.”
Injury-wise, Alex Cochrane has recovered from the bang he sustained in the 1-0 win at Swansea City in the Carabao Cup that forced his substitution.
And with Paik Seung-ho and Demarai Gray returning to action in south Wales as well, there are no fresh injury for Blues.
